Opening arc between two contacts can be blown by magnetic fields and moves on the contact surfaces, which shortens arc duration and alleviates contact erosion. The stagnant time and the moving velocity are two key parameters to describe the arc motion and the blowing performance. So, a magneto hydrodynamic model of opening arc under a permanent magnetic field was proposed to study the influence of magnetic flux density and current scale on the stagnant time and the average motion velocity. The effect of the magnetic field on the arc duration and the contact mass erosion was also revealed. The validity of the model was finally proven by the experimental arc duration and arc motion characteristics. This study may be benefit for designing a permanent magneto arc chamber.
