Investigation on Arc Characteristics under Axial and Transverse Magnetic Fields

Arc characteristics are investigated when the arc is driven by external axial and transverse magnetic field. A high speed camera is adopted to take photographs of the arc, and an oscillograph is used to record arc voltages and currents. Experimental circuit is 28V/5A resistive circuit. Contact material is Ag/CdO. The circuit is opened by the contacts at five various velocities. It is found out that arc duration is shortened more markedly with the increment of the magnetic flux density, and the shortening ratio of arc duration decreases with the increment of the opening velocity. Experiments also show that both of the two types of magnetic fields can accelerate the motion of the arc root, and the magnetic field has influence only on the arc whose length is longer than a critical value. It is also revealed by the arc photographs that the mean velocity of the arc root increases with the increment of the axial magnetic field, while it decreases as the transverse magnetic field increases.
