Axial and transverse magnetic fields are widely used in many kinds of switches to decrease arc erosion. In this paper, the influence of these two kinds of magnetic fields on the gaseous phase transition and arc erosion was particularly studied for AgSnO_2 contacts breaking a 28V/25A circuit. The experiments were carried out under the resistive load and the inductive load with the atmospheric environment. The relationships between the flux densities varying from 0 to 100 mT and arc durations of metallic phase and gaseous phase were obtained. In order to learn the arc erosion, the contacts were on break operation for thousands of times and the material loss and transfer were measured. The results can be used to guide which kind of magnetic field is more efficient to decrease arc erosion.
