The phenomenon of retrograde motion of arc in the air of normal pressure under tranverse magnetic field was studied. AgSnO_2 contacts were set in DC resistive and inductive circuits, respectively. The break voltage was 28V, the current ranged from 1 to 5A, and the magnetic flux density from 0 to 100mT. A high speed camera and an oscilloscope were used to record time variations of arc images, voltages and currents, simultaneously. Relationships between flux density, arc current and voltage, distributions of arc positions were obtained under different loads. Experiment results show that the retrograde motion of arc in inductive circuit is more obvious than that of in resistive circuit. With the information of arc root position, voltage and current, the mechanism of the retrograde motion was explained.
