To establish an efficient program of fertilizer application for Paeonia plants, absorption of mineral nutrients by the plants and changes in dry weight of root were examined in the Hokkaikdo Experimental Station for Medicinal Plants from 1985 to 1990. The results were as follows. 1)In the first year plants, the dry weight of plant was almost the same as the weight of the seed rhizome. Roots began to grow after the middle period of growth of the first year. In two or more year old plants, the weight of leaves and stems increased to the flowering time and that of underground part, especially rootsgrew after the flowering to resting time. 2)The nitrogen content in leaves was high in the early growth period and low in the flowering time. The content rose again after the flowering and gradually decreased to the late stage of growth. The time courses of the phosphoric acid and potash contents were similar to that of nitrogen content. The nitrogen and potash contents in the underground part were kept constant during the growth period, except in the early growth stage. The phosphoric acid content in roots increased rapidly in the last period of growth. However, the content in rhizome was low in the early period, high after the flowering time and decreased in the late stage of growth. The change with time seemed to be related to the differentiation or growth of buds. 3)The amounts of mineral nutrients absorbed during five years of growth were 54kg nitrogen, 46kg phosphoric acid (P_2O_5), 68kg potash (K_2O), 102 kg calcium (CaO) and 15kg magnesium (MgO) when 3,333 plants were planted in 10 ares. The rates of absorption in each year to the total amounts absorbed during five years were 3-5% in the first, 12-15% in the second, 19-27% in the third, 22-26% in the fourth and 34-40% in the fifth year.
