Using the dual energy CT technique, we can differentiate materials with large atomic numbers such as iodine and xenon. Dual energy CT angiography for the evaluation of perfusion defects in pulmonary embolism and xenon CT for the evaluation of ventilation defects could replace perfusion and ventilation scans. Virtual non-contrast image can be used for the evaluation of the presence of calcification or enhancement of the mass. Knowledge of the application and typical images of dual energy CT may lead radiologists to use and to properly interpret dual energy CT for thoracic application.
