A Control Method for Improving Performance of Permanent Magnetic Actuators in Vacuum Circuit Breakers

The objective of this paper is to propose a control method to enhance the velocity characteristics of permanent magnetic actuators in vacuum circuit breakers. The method utilizes both coils in the PMA simultaneously and controls the direction, duration and starting time of the current in coils. The control method is implemented by a control circuit and the experiments were carried out by circuit breaker testing equipment. The experimental results indicate that the opening velocity can be increased and the velocity characteristics in the closing operation can be improved. In addition, the operating current can be reduced evidently.
