The influence of a surrounding gas on arc duration time and the gaseous phase transition were experimentally researched in Ag, AgSnO_2 Break arc. Arc duration ta, Metallic phase duration tm, and Metallic to gaseous phase transition ratio G were measured. There are four kinds of surrounding gases, that is, air, oxygen, nitrogen, and helium. Pressure was set to atmospheric pressure (0.1MPa). Under the E=48V, closed contacts current Io has been changed within the range of 0.4-5A. As a result, the arc duration of Ag became longer in oxygen, and the gaseous phase transition was occurred in most small Io. The arc voltage waveform has changed with a surrounding gas and the contact material. Moreover, a surrounding gas influences Io of the gaseous phase transition boundary in Ag. On the other hand, the influence of gas was small in AgSnO_2.
