概要

Part 1. Movement of Population. Survey was carried out on the movement in recent years of population to and from Iida City and towns and villages in Shimoma County which are located in one of the remotest corners of the county. The district under investigation was divided into five zones according to the methods of classification based on agricultural economics and the form of farming administration. The following observations were made : 1. Comparison of the population for 1960 with that for 1955 shows that there was a decrease in the total population in all the towns and villages except for Iida City where the total population registered an increase of about 1%, the rate of decrease being greater in the villages farther from the center of district, with the decrease being as much as 10% in mountain communities. 2. When population was divided into various component groups, the number of younger persons showed a decrease but the number of older persons showed an increase,, the tendency being marked in mountain communities. This meant a decrease in the number of persons in the productive age group. The decrease in the number of persons in the age group 15 to 19 years in mountain communities amounted to 45%. 3. The tendency of a decrease in the number of full-time farmers and an increase in the number of part-time farmers was marked in Iida City and agricultural and mountain communities near it. The decrease in the number of households was greater in mountain communities than in agricultural and mountain communities. As viewed from the standpoint of industrial structure, the population tended to shift from the primary industry to the secondary and tertiary industries. The persons engaged in the primary industry tended to be older, with women predominating in number and those who take up a side job increasing in number. 4. There was generally a decrease in population due to social causes, the tendency being marked in mountain communities. Iida City had an outflow of population of no small magnitude, but the decrease in population was compensated for by an increase due to the inflow of population with the total population showing a tendency to be stagnant. On the other hand, mountain communities showed a marked decrease in population, with the outflow being greater than the inflow by over 50%. 5. Of agricultural and mountain communities, those which have marked characteristics of farming communities-the communities where the inhabitants' tax level is low, the farmers' rate and the proportion of persons engaged in the primary industry are high, and the size of area of the arable land per household is large-showed a marked decrease in population.
