On the social development of Zhong-guo (中國) there are many different opinions, and no theory has found complete acceptance yet. At present, in Zhong-guo itself, the theory of Bo-Zan Jian (翦伯贊) and his school and that held by Mo-Ruo Guo (郭沫若) and his school are the two main theories, which are opposed to each other. Moreover, there are several other different views. Some Japanese scholars of Chinese history hold other theories, and in Europe there are others again. In this paper I have not examined each theory, but, criticizing the two main theories, I have tried to put forward my own interpretation. As a result, I have come to hold the opinion that in the Yin (殷) and the Xi-Zhou (西周) periods of Zhong-guo, slavery was a dominant characteristic of their social system, and that from the Qin-Han (奏漢) period to around the close of Qing (清) period, feudalism was dominant, while the periods of Chun-Qiu (春秋) and Zhan-guo (戰國) should be regarded as the transitional period from slavery to feudalism. Moreover, I observed and discussed the transition and development of feudal society in the Qin-Han period, and the meaning and the system of feudalism which was achieved in Han period. The reason why I have made these additional studies in this paper is that I intend to define the fundamental characteristics of the Chinese classics of Confucian which came into Japan.
