The function of a cognitive radio system (CRS) can be classified as cognitive engine (CE) and sensing. We present a new sensing architecture for the CRS. The architecture adds a new functional entity called sensing controller (SC) inside the CE, and adds a new functional entity called sensing information processer (SIP) inside the sensing. The CE that resides in the CR node, either a cognitive base station (CBS) or a cognitive terminal (CT), fulfills the decision making process of dynamic spectrum usage. The sensing function are realized by sensors inside CR nodes or distributed sensor network. Based on this architecture, we give a use case where selection of distributed sensors is performed in Rayleigh fading channel to improve the detection performance and thus improving spectrum usage. Based on an analytical analysis, we prove the benefits of sensor selection. Results show that using energy detection with 5000 symbols in -15dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment, we can reduce the false alarm rate from 0.95 to 0.1 while keeping 99% protection to primary users by selecting among ten sensors. This indicates a significant improvement of throughput of secondary users. Finally, we compare the performance of selecting from a cluster of distributed sensors near primary users and that near secondary users. Results show that the performance is dependent on the condition of both user channel (from primary users to sensors) and sensor channel (between sensors and cognitive nodes). If the SNR of the user channel is low, choice of sensors close to secondary user is beneficial and these sensors shall be selected based on the user channel. If the SNR of the user channel is relatively high, it is beneficial to use sensors located close to secondary users and the sensors shall be selected based on user channel.
