Sugar Metabolic Process of the ^<14>C-photoassimilates on the Translocation Pathways of Tomato Plants(Plant Production Science Horicultural Science)

The metabolic process of the ^<14>C-photoassimilates in tomato plants was analyzed according to the vascular system shown by Li et.al. (2000). When ^<14>CO_2 was fed to the 7th or 8th leaf on the main shoot, which developed nine leaves under the 1st inflorescence, the highest radioactivity was recovered in the internode just below the ^<14>CO_2-fed leaf among the internodes on the main shoot or sympodiums. In each internode, particularly strong radioactivity was recovered in 3 of 8 vascular bundles. Among the pedicels of the 1st inflorescence, the highest radioactivity was recovered in the 1st and 3rd pedicels when the 8th leaf was fed ^<14>CO_2 and in the 2nd and 4th pedicels when the 7th leaf was fed ^<14>CO_2. At the mesophyll of the ^<14>CO_2-fed leaf, the radioactivity of ^<14>C-hexose was higher than that of ^<14>C-sucrose. At the vascular bundles in the petiole of the ^<14>CO_2-fed leaf, only ^<14>C-sucrose was detected. The same tendency was observed in the internode just below the ^<14>CO_2-fed leaf and in the pedicels of the 1st inflorescence. Therefore, the photoassimilates were translocated from the ^<14>CO_2-fed leaf without any metabolic change in the translocation pathways to the flowers and fruits.
