Unconventional Charge Density Wave, Fluctuating f Orbitals, and Metal-Insulator Transition in PrRu_4P_<12>(Condensed matter: electronic structure and electrical, magnetic, and optical properties)

A charge density wave transition and an associated metal-insulator transition in skutterudite PrRu_4P_<12> are studied theoretically on the basis of an interaction between conduction and f electrons. It is found that the thermal fluctuation of f orbitals significantly reduces the magnitude of the gap in the quasiparticle spectrum even at low temperature. As a result, we show that resistivity exhibits a characteristic temperature dependence, which accounts well for a recent experimental observation.
