This paper was described on the compulsory sugar-cane planting during the Satsuma-clanera, including details about planting locations and production techniques. Excepting those islanders who were graciously deemed to be exempt from the workings by the governmental authorities, all the adults had to be employed in planting and making sugar. Responsibilities were allocated in accordance with the difference of sex and size of property. The government used to force the islanders to pay the tax in the form of mascovado instead that of rice, this was the reason why the farmers had to plant sugar, even if they owned paddy fields. In the beginning, the islanders were accustomed to make use of the Chinese way of planting and producing sugar. However, since then, they managed to make independent progressions by making use of the water-wheels and the improved compressors. Thanks to these progresses, productivity has been on the way. However, the object of compulsory sugar-can planting and the financial rehabilitation has been the prosperity of the Satsuma-clan, and not that of the farmers, themselves. When the final period of fewdalism drew nearer, what the government aimed at was the accumulation of capital for the introduction of modern industrial technologies. These objectives have controlled everything and everybody, accordingly, the huge profits were far from being enjoyed by most of the farmers, working on the spot.
