Agricultural productivity in Amami-Oshima is lower than many other regions of Japan. The causes, generally concern the following items. The first natural and social conditions, namely, that arable land is limited, that typhoon attacks frequentry, that crops often suffer damage from drought and that free selection in commodities prodtction are difficult because of the situation of Amami-Oshima settled remote from market, etc. If these productivity problems were studied deeper there might be found some other conditions more important than these. One of which is assumed to be producton relationship- (land ownership). Therefore, in this thesis the following transition of Landownership was considered. 1) Division of arable land (paddy-field) and sugar industrial policy. 2) Development of wealthy famer and division of arable land. 3) Decline of wealthy farmer. 4) Landlord. 5) Agrarian reform. By this study, it was cleared that the low productivity which has been brought forth historically by extreme exploitation and low agricaltural investment, and the transition in landownership in Amami-Oshima has been connected closely with the political, economaicl developmets in the mainland of Japan.
