In this paper, a research was made on the origin of sugar-industry at Amami Region. Some literatures written about the sugar-industry at Amami were studied in order to corroborate a few cognitions obtained about its origin. Concerning the history of the sugar-industry, there has been a prevalent saying that it has the oldest histroy in Japan, as it has been managed since the age of Meiji 10's. It was after the 40th year of Showa that the recorded materials on the sugar-industry were being put under earnest examination. As the result of these examinations, some doubts were cast on the popular view on the history of sugar-industry, with the affirmation that the past materials are unreliable and that they are under the suspicion of being artificially made-up by the hands of Administrators of Meiji-era. The prevailing view affirming that the sugar-industry was commenced during the Keicho-era was fixed to be quite unreliable as far as the presently discovered materials were concerned. Rather it was assumed by the author that it may be reasonable to suppose that the sugar-industry was introduced to the Amami Region at the early period of the Genroku-era. However, there remains another possibility that the sugar-industry was introduced in the age of free-trading, accordingly further research should be necessary before any final conclusion is fixed.
