• Sugar-cane is ranked first in the agriculture of Tanegashima today. In this thesis, the transition of sugar-cane manufacturing industry from the beginning in feudal age to the early Meiji period was considered. I. Sugar-cane manufacturing industry in the feudal age. 1) Introduction of sugar-cane manufacturing industry. 2) Sugar monopoly. 3) Quantity in sugar production. 4) Sugar production technique. II. Sugar-cane manufacturing industry in the early Meiji period. 1) Declining of sugar-cane manufacturing industry at the Meiji Restoration. 2) Movement of sugar-cane manufacturing industry revival. 3) Moment of sugar-cane manufacturing industry revival=Experiment of sugar-cane manufacturing industry. Study on sugar-cane manufacturing industry from that time down to the present day will be reported later. In this thesis, the author utilized some materials for history kept from public eye, and endeavored to arrange the fragmentary descriptions made until now for understanding. After the Restoration of 1868,sugar monopoly system was abolished and production technique improved from that of draft animal to water power, from wooden wheel to stone or iron wheel etc., but there was the following common character in the respective two periods. In feudal age, establishment of Lord-finances was the power pushing this industry forward, and in the early Meiji period, there was priority point of view for re-establishment of national economy ; in both the periods, there was a characteristic mark which remarkably was devoid of the producers interests.
