A 40-year-old healthy woman whose blood smear showed several red cell abnormalities, including Howell-Jolly bodies, revealed to have splenic hypoplasia (hyposplenia) by computed tomographic (CT) scan. Mean proportion of abnormal cells was less than those of splenectomized patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and a splenectomized woman because of trauma. She had no history of organ defect or childhood infectious disorders, nor did she demonstrate abnormal immunological function. Familial survey revealed this to be a very rare case of sporadic hyposplenia without immunological abnormalities or organ defects.
