To investigate the frequency and characteristics of pulmonary hypertension (PHT) in patients with anti-centromere antibody (ACA). Among patients who visited our unit showing positive FANA (fluorescent antinuclear antibody), sixty three ACA-positive patients were enrolled in this study (ACA group). Forty seven FANA-negative patients were selected as a control. Patients with pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) estimated by color Doppler echocardiography of 30mmHg and above were assigned to PHT group. The incidence of PHT for ACA group was significantly higher at 31.7% when compared with 2.1% in control group (p<0.001). The incidence of definite PHT cases (7 of 63, 11.1%) in ACA group was significantly higher than that in control group (0, 0%) (p<0.02). The incidence of pitting scars for definite PHT group (7 of 8, 62.5%) was significantly higher than that for non PHT group (12 of 43, 28.0%) (p<0.002). The incidence of increased serum creatinine for definite PHT group (87.5%) was also significantly higher than that for non PHT group (44.2%) (p<0.03). The results of the present study showed that ACA-positive patients are likely to develop PHT.
