In the 1920's, photochemotherapy started in the dermatological field. Goeckerman published his technique for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris with tar preparations and ultraviolet light (UVL) in 1925. In the 1940's, combined 8-methoxypsoralen (8MOP) and sunlight therapy for vitiligo vulgaris started and is still used now. After this, photochemotherapy with 8MOP and longwave ultraviolet light (PUVA therapy) was applied to the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris in 1972 and many reports concerning this method have been published. In this paper, we have tried to summarize photochemotherapy reported in the dermatological field and experienced in our clinic for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris and some other skin diseases.
