A rapid colorimetric determination of molybdenum in steels with stannous chloride and potassium thiocyanate is made successfully. In the method, iron and other metals are separated off with sodium hydroxide in the presence of sodium phosphate. Nickel, manganese, copper, silicon, vanadium or tungsten in steel has no influence on the determination, The colorimetry can be carried out by employing the permanent standard solutions, sodium dichromate and cobalt nitrate or of iron alum and cobalt nitrate. Analyses of some steel samples can be made within twenty-five minutes with high accuracy.
