Mercury and bismuth form the complex compounds with antipyrine and ammonium thiocyanate can be extracted with organic solvents. By measuring the absorbance of their extracts in the ultraviolet region with the Beckman model DU spectrophotometer, micro-determinations of mercury and bismuth were performed. A mixed solvent of amyl alcohol and ethyl acetate (3 : 1) was the best extraction solvent for mercury compound and a mixed solvent of amyl alcohol and ethyl acetate (1 : 4) for bismuth compound. It was found that a few gammas of mercury and 1γ of bismuth could be determined.
