• Oharano and Ooe, villages to the south-west of Kyoto, have been noted for their bamboo spouts, and the livelihood of the villagers largely depended on them. To meet the agricultural depression of 1930's, Ooe began to plant persimmons. Oharano has bamboo sprouts as main products, and Ooe has persimmons and the sprouts. After World War II, cultivation of bamboo sprouts became not so profitable as in 1910's. Moreover, rapid rise of the land price, caused by the expansion of urban area, hinders further development of persimmon-growing. Now, some peasants get livelihood considerably from other kinds of work, but others try to find some new way in agriculture.
