Hypothesis : Actigraph is a reliable instrument for evaluating symptoms of depression and psychomotor symptoms. Subject and Method : A patient diagnosed with major depression as defined by the international classification of disease 10 was admitted and treated with paroxetin, one of the antidepressant. The recovery process of the patient was evaluated by actigraph and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) by Zung. Results: The patient's motor activity as measured by actigraph increased during the morning and afternoon, while the motor activity during sleep decreased throughout the admission period. A highly significant statically positive correlation was observed between the SDS score and the motor activity of the sleep. At the same time, there was highly significant positive correlation between the days of admission and the daily motor activity. Conclusion : A correlation between the symptoms of depression or psychomotor symptoms measured by the SDS and the motor activity measured by actigraph was statistically proved. Actigraph will be a useful and objective instrument for measuring the improvement of depressive patients and evaluating their psychomotor symptoms.
