This paper focuses on the influence of different factors on arc motion in a simplified low-voltage circuit breaker chamber. Based on a group of governing equations, a three-dimensional (3-D) model is built and solved by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The influence of external magnetic field and geometry of the arc chamber on arc motion are analysed. The characteristics of the motion of the arc plasma are calculated, and verified using images recorded by a high-speed camera. In addition, calculated thermodynamic and transport properties of air-POM vapour mixtures are presented and the influence of POM vapour on arc motion characteristics is simulated.
