The treatment response and stability in anterior open bite cases were evaluated in 24 anterior open bite patients who were treated with an edgewise appliance as extraction cases. The samples were divided into group 1 of 11 growing patients at dental stage IIIB and group 2 of 13 non-growing patients at dental stage IVC. Before treatment with edgewise appliance only group 1 but not group 2, was treated with some orthopedic appliance. The treatment and posttreatment changes were studied using cephalometric films taken before treatment (T1), immediately after treatment (T2) and over one-year after treatment (T3). In group 1, there were significant differences in the linear measurements because of mandibular growth but not in the angular measurements between T1 and T2. The overjet significantly decreased between T2 and T3. In group 2, there were significant differences in the angular measurements (U1 to SN, L1 to Mand. pl., Interincisal angle, Upper occl. pl. to SN, Lower occl. pl. to Mand. pl.) but not in the linear measurements between T1 and T2. The overbite significantly decreased between T2 and T3 and its reduction significantly correlated Upper occl. pl. to SN in the group 2. These results showed that relapse in the anterior open bite patients mainly occurred due to mandibular growth in growing patients and at the dentoalveolar portion in non-growing patients. Early treatment may minimize overbite reduction and increase the stability after orthodontic treatment in anterior open bite patients.
