The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between occlusal function and periodontal microvasculature. In the present study, histological and quantitative investigations were performed in hypofunctional rat mandibular molars which did not have contact with the opposing teeth. Histological sections were prepared and stained by immunohistochemistry for von Willebrand factor, which is specific for vascular endothelial cells. The findings were as follows : 1. At 1 week, many blood vessels were occluded in the hypofunctional molar periodontal ligament. The number of blood vessels with blood flow had decreased. 2. At 3 months, the periodontal ligament contained fewer occluded blood vessels than at 1 week. However, they were smaller in diameter than those on the control side. The total number of blood vessels on the experimental side was decreased. 3. The proportion of vascular area in the periodontal ligament tended to decrease with time. These results suggest that decreased occlusal function caused sequential changes in the periodontal microvasculature, from the occlusion of blood vessels (acute change) to a decrease in the number of blood vessels (chronic change), as a result of chronic environmental changes.
