A liquid helium cryostat for high precision positron annihilation 2γ angular correlation measurements is described. It enables us to make long period, highly stable measurements in the temperature range between the boiling point of helium and that of nitrogen with a relatively small consumption rate of liquid helium. The radioactive positron source is placed outside the vacuum chamber of the cryostat. This enables the source to be put on and off at will and also excludes the possibility of any trouble caused by cooling it with the sample in vacuum. This structure also makes it possible to shield the sample from positron and γ-ray irradiation until it is cooled to the desired temperature.
