The secondary electron spectra, N_S(E), from Ni(111) were monitored during O_2 adsorption at room temperature. At the same time AES was used to monitor θ(O_2) and the oxidation process. It was observed that the variation of N_S(E) was clearly divided into two stages: in the first, the onset of N_S(E) shifted but the shape remained unchanged and in the second, not only the onset but the shape also changed. The second stage was found to correspond to an initial oxidation process from the chemical shift of the Ni(MVV) AES spectrum. Furthermore, the change in the onset of N_S(E) was found to directly follow the work function change, even in the second stage where the shape of N_S(E) varied significantly.
