A target system with three Mylar target cells of diameter 10 cm was constructed for the precise and efficient measurement of p^^-p and p^^-d total cross-sections. Two of the target cells were filled with liquid hydrogen and liquid deuterium, and the remaining one was empty. Hydrogen gas was liquefied by a mechanical refrigerator and deuterium gas was liquefied by heat exchange with liquid hydrogen. The driving system of the vacuum jacket allowed any target cell to be brought into the beam within a few minutes, with good position reproducibility. Care was taken to minimize systematic errors caused by the target in determining the total cross-sections.
