Non Faceted Surfaces of Cd Crystals Grown from Cd-Pb Droplets by the VLS Method

Polyhedral Cd crystals having either 14 or 20 faces were grown from Cd-Pb droplets by the VLS (vapor-liquid-solid) method. Their surfaces were always curved over the growth temperature range, and the faceted-to-non faceted transition did not occur in this system. This transition, however, occurred in other system such as Cd-Bi, Cd-Sn, Zn-Sn and Zn-Bi. The quasi-dangling bond model [H. Yumoto et al.: J. Cryst. Growth 82 (1987) 459] was able to explain this phenomenon. When the interfacial components of the nearest neighbors of A and B are different from each other in an A-B binary system, quasi-dangling bonds are generated. As there are no quasi-dangling bonds in the Cd-Pb system, a rough surface always has a lower solid-liquid interfacial free energy than that of a smooth surface.
