A theory of isothermal engines operating between two different chemical potentials is proposed. The theory utilizes the formal similarity of the chemiosmotic energy conversions in cell membranes to energy conversions in heat engines. The efficiency obtained depends on the two kind of chemical potentials, i. e. inside the cells and the outside ones, and becomes maximum by taking the inside chemical potential zero. Assuming that the efficiency of energy conversions is optimum in cell membranes, a possible modification of this theory is proposed. The theory is applied to some other problems of energy conversions in cell membranes : such as redox processes with the electron transport chain, ATP synthesis with ATPase driven by H^+s, muscle contractions based on the sliding filament model, and pumping of Na^+s and K^+ s by Na^+s-K^+ ATPase.
