A systematic study, both experimental and theoretical, is described for an analysis of the laser-enhanced ionization (LEI) detection scheme with a microwave resonant cavity. Signal intensity for various resonant modes is consistent with the result of a numerical calculation based on a plasma-microwave interaction. The LEI signals of sodium atoms aspirated into a C_3H_8/O_2 flame have been observed down to the concentration of 0.1 ng/mL. Broad band LEI signals have also been observed in a fuel-rich flame and are considered to be due to laser-induced heating and subsequent thermal ionization of large molecules.
