High Magnetic Field Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rates in the Ground Quartet State of a Cr^<3+> Ion in Ruby

Relaxation-rates in 'A. state of a Cr" ton in ruby have been studied byoptical observation on population changes caused by application of magneticfield of rectangular pulses at 4.2 K. The direct one phonon emitting process isdominant in the field range from 47 k0e to 128 k0e. No transition occurs be-tween the levels 7V.=l and -j, where M. is the compoutent of spin angularmomentum along the field. The two types of transitions, AM.=2 and AM,=1,are found to constitute the spin-lattice relaxation. The rates of these transitionsare (7.66f0.]5) x10 '#'ms ', and (7.65f0.20)xl0 '#'ms ', resrectivelv,where H is the magnetic field strength in k0e.
