An optical head with an annular phase-shifting apodizer was experimentally developed, and was found to have a high readout resolution and low readout signal error rate, permitting higher recording densities for the optical disk system. This apodizing head was confirmed experimentally and theoretically to have large tolerance for head defocusing and ample allowance for disk thickness variation, compared to conventional optical heads.
