EPR Study on Surface Properties of ZnS and CdS

The narrow EPR signals originated from the centers near the surface were observed in ZnS and CdS. These signals, appeared by heating the crushed samples in vacuum, have the same g-values of 2.0027 ± 0.0003. Upon exposure to oxygen, the signal height decreases with broadening in tlae line width through the dipolar interaction of oxygen molecules adsorbed physically onto the surface with the paramagnetic centers. At low temperatures, the signal becomes more sensitive to oxygen and adsorbed water vapour prevents the dipolar interaction of oxygen. The experimental results suggest that the origin of the center is the sulphur vacancy produced during the vacuum heat-treatment.
