Thermoluminescence in polyethylene was observed after an application of a half-wave rectified voltage at 77 K. Two peaks of thermoluminescence were obtained at ca. 77 K and 170 K〜200 K at a rate of increase of temperature of ca. 120 K/min. Electrodes of the sample consisted of fine copper wires moulded in a polyethylene sheet. The polarity effect of pre-application of a half-wave rectified voltage on thermoluminescence was also investigated. Thermoluminescence in the case of the positive polarity of the applied voltage increased much more with the increasing voltage than in the case of the negative polarity. Electron emission from the fine copper wires may affect thermoluminescence in the case of the negative polarity. The glow integral of thermoluminescence with temperature was increased by pre-heating of the sample in air.
