Effect of Elongation on Dielectric Breakdown Strength in Polyethylene

A measurement of the dielectric breakdown strength in low- and high-density polyethylene was carried out under the condition of elongation by tensile stress. The wave forms of applied voltages were a.c., d.c. and impulse (1×40 μs) voltages, and the thickness of films of polyethylene was ca. 50 μm. In the case of low-density polyethylene, the breakdown strength with a.c., d.c. and impulse voltages decreased with increasing rate of elongation up to 30% followed by an increase untill the rate of elongation reached ca. 160%. In the case of high-density polyethylene, the breakdown strength of d.c. and a.c. decreased monotonically. These behaviors were discussed in terms of the results of measurement of infrared dichroism due to elongation.
