A new propeller design method to obtain the blade section shapes with prescribed pressure distribution was developed, combining a two-dimensional foil design theory with a propeller lifting surface one. In this method, the new blade sections can be designed in accordance with the variation of the section lift coefficient in a given wake. Using this design method, the effects of the pressure distribution characteristics on the propeller cavitation performance were experimentally investigated. The main results can be summarized as follows: When the propeller working condition was not severe and no cloud cavitation was generated, flat pressure distribution was effective to increase the efficiency and decrease the pressure fluctuations and noise. The criteria of the flat pressure distribution to be given were proposed. When the harmful cloud cavitation was generated on a usual propeller, triangular pressure distribution could suppress the cloud cavitation completely. However, the pressure fluctuations and noise. Thus quasi-steady study was made using two-dimensional hydrofoils. As a result, a prospect of the pressure distribution which would reduce the pressure fluctuations as well as suppress the cloud cavitation was obtained.
