Study on Intense-Ion-Beam Transport Through an Insulator Beam Guide

An efficient simple transport method for an intense-charged-particle beam is proposed in this paper. Previously we studied a new system for electron beam transport using an insulator beam guide. In the present study we apply this system to an intense-ion-beam transport, and investigate the transport of intense proton, Cs^+ and Pb^+ beams. An intense ion beam is transported through the insulator beam guide, and generates a plasma on the insulator's inner surface. Electrons are extracted from the plasma. The ion beam charge is effectively neutralized by the electrons. The amount of the emitted electrons is self-regulated by the net space charge of the beam. In the case of proton beam transport, a virtual anode formation at the initial stage is prevented by a prefilled plasma gas in the beam transport area. On the other hand, the Cs^+ and Pb^+ ion beams do not tend to form a virtual anode. The animations of the beam transport allow insight into the time-dependent characteristics of the physics governing the intense ion beam transport. Consequently, an intense ion beam can be effectively transported by the proposed simple system.
