Thirty-eight C_4 species including both mono- and dicotyledons were surveyed for light-enhanced pyruvate uptake into mesophyll chloroplasts and tested whether this enhancement could be mimicked by either a "sodium jump" or a "proton jump" of the medium in the dark. The majority of species responded to a sodium jump, while only species of the Andropogoneae and the Arundinelleae from the Gramineae responded to a proton jump.
