Levels of protein and mRNA for alanine aminotransferase, which is involved in the C_4 pathway of Panicum miliaceum, were measured during recovery from nitrogen stress. The results indicate that the enzyme accumulates selectively in response to nitrogen availability primarily as a consequence of changes in the level of its mRNA.
