The force generated by tendrils of Passiflora coerulea during contact coiling was measured electronically with a strain transducer fitted with a beam lever and coupled through amplification to a chart recorder. After a lag phase of ca. 2 min, 6 to 12 ventral mechanical stimuli produced a coiling force of the magnitude of 240 mg per min. If during the course of coiling, the dorsal side was stimulated, force development decelerated immediately. Subsequent ventral stimulation caused force development to resume. Continual alternation of the site of stimulation resulted in parallel changes in the rate of force development. A possible adaptive advantage of this phenomenon to the plant is discussed.
