Cycloadditions of 1, 3-butadicnc derivatives having an electron-rich group at the 1-position with 4- or 3-substituted 2(1H)-quinolones were carried out to give the richly functionalized phenanthridines under both atmospheric and high pressure conditions. Furthermore, the reactivity of 4- or 3-substituted 2(1H)-quinolones acting as a dienophile with 1-substituted dienes was examined using MO calculation.
