Weld thermal cycles were measured in weld-heat affected zone of TIG arc welded commercial-purity nickel of 2 mm thickness. Applying the method to calculate grain growth during thermal cycles, proposed by the authors previously, to the measured weld thermal cycles, grain growth in weld-heat affected zone was investigated. Main results obtained are as follows. 1) Distribution of grain sizes in weld-heat affected zone, course of grain growth and grain growth rate during weld thermal cycles can be calculated by this method. 2) If the initial grain size is sufficiently small, the amount of grain growth during heating cycle is about 60-80% of the total amount of grain growth during the thermal cycle. As the initial grain size increases, this proportion decreases. 3) During cooling cycle, above 90% of the total amount of grain growth is already attained when temperature falls 50℃ from peak temperature. 4) Grain growth rate has a maximum just before the temperature reaches the peak temperature. As the initial grain size increases, grain growth rate decreases. 5) Effect of initial grain size on the distribution of grain sizes in weld-heat affected zone is made clear.
