Cause of the loss of toughness in HAZ of high strength steel was investigated mainly from the viewpoint of Martensite-Austenite (M-A) constituent. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) M-A constituent is formed from the austenite in which carbon has been condensed up to 0.5-0.8% on continuous cooling. And this constituent consists of twin martensite, lath martensite and retained austenite. (2) Rapid loss of toughness with an increased cooling time is caused by appearance and increase of M-A constituent. (3) The extent of the harmful effect of M-A constituent on toughness decreases as cooling time increases. (4) This harmful effect is mitigated by low temperature (≃250℃) tempering.
