Characteristics of Pupal Diapause in the Univoltine Papilionid, Luehdorfia japonica (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae)

In order to elucidate the nature of pupal dormancy in Luehdorfia japonica, pupae obtained from larvae reared under a daylength of 16 hours at 20℃ were subjected to various temperature and photoperiodic conditions. The results indicated that the pupal dormancy in this species is a summer diapause. The diapause was terminated by a short daylength below about 15 hours and a 'moderate' temperature between 14 and 25℃. A 20-day exposure to a short daylength was sufficient to terminate the diapause, and once adult differentiation commenced it proceeded under a long day of 16 hours or at a temperature as low as 5℃. Even under a long day, lowering the temperature from 23 to 16℃ terminated the diapause. Pupae kept outdoors presumably terminated diapause in September and then overwintered without any arrest of development. The pupae terminated diapause more slowly under a 15-hour photoperiod at 20℃ than under a much shorter daylength. Photoperiod during the larval stage affected the critical photoperiod as well as the pattern of photoperiodic response of the resulting pupae.
