Recognition of Opponent and Mate in Japanese Horned Beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma L. (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae)

Male of the Japanese horned beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma, is known to fight against conspecific individuals and other species such as stag beetles. Its fighting behavior was observed and analyzed experimentally using the black and white styrofoam models. Male turned its head toward both color types of model by the tactile sense but after turning only the black model was violently attacked. This result suggested that males of A. dichotoma employed visual sense in recognition of opponent and the blackish object was regarded as opponent for them. It was confirmed that males in this species recognized females with chemical sense because the model coated with ether extract of female's body released male's sexual behavior regardless of the color of model.
