The present paper briefly describes the types of sounds emitted by young pups of Micromys minutus under various conditions. Type A sounds were characterized by a simple pattern without any frequency jump, generally consisting of two (occasionally three) frequency components: fundamental and 2nd harmonics. Type B sound had a more complex pattern containing a frequency jump. Type C sounds were audible and louder than the others. Some parts of the sound were very noisy while others were pure. A train of Type B sounds was frequently recorded under "Isolation" conditions. A train of Type A sounds was almost exclusively under "Handling" condition. Type C sounds, which were seldom emitted under the previous two conditions, were frequently observed under "Hard Treatment" conditions. In concordance with other workers' studies, Type C sounds containing audible components can undoubtedly be regarded as a response to a pain stimulus Since sounds of this type were also observed under "Isolation" conditions, they probably correspond to the distress call described by Zippelius(1974). Type A and B sounds can not be clearly related to a function at present.
