So far as I know, the Family Agallidae is represented in Japan by two species, Agallia pteridis Matsumura, 1905 and A. onukii Matsumura, 1912. When I examined them carefully, I found the above two species are not congeneric with the genotype, Agallia consobrina Curtis, 1833. 1(2) Vertex short and of uniform lenth. Pronotum finely granulated. Male plates small, without conspicuous setae. Aedeagus simple with or without accessory processes.…Genus AGALLIA Curtis, 1833 (Genotype: Agallia consobrina Curtis, 1833) 2(1) Vertex distinctly shorter medially than next the eye. Pronotum with some short transverse clevations or with distinct punctures. 3(4) Male plates strongly sclerotized, convergent caudad and a little recurved dorsad, with neither spine-like setae nor filamentous ones. Inner margin of the plates touched each other. Valve with the hind margin evenly rounded. Pygofer superiorly on each side with a sharp projection. Ventral surface of the tenth segment developed caudad. Aedeagus stout, in the apical one-third erect, with two accessory processes on the dorsal surface at about middle; gonopore subapical on the caudal surface. Pronotum scattered with some transverse elevations. Veins on tegmina comparatively obscure except apical ones. Cu_2 not deeply curved anteriorly. Sexually entirely different in coloration.…JAPANAGALLIA Gen. nov. (Genotype: Agallia pteridis Matsumura, 1905) 4(3) Male plates weakly sclerotized, of the surface not flat, along the inner margin, submarginally with several spine-like setac which are uniseriate and also with many long filamentous setae above. Inner margins of the plates not touched each other. Valve with hind margin caudally projecting about the middle. Pygofer remarkably depressed laterally, with filamentous setae on the lateral surfaces. Ventral surface of the tenth segment not developed caudad. Aedeagu long. recurved dorsal and developed cephalad, thinned towards apex so as to be rather tape-shaped in the lateral view, without any accessory process. Pronotum scattered with distinct punctures. Veins especially those on clavus conspicuously clevated and distinct. Cu_2 deeply curved anteriorly.…ONUKIGALLIA Ge. nov. (Genotype: Agallia onukii Matsumura, 1912) Japanese species: 1. Japanagallia pteridis (Matsumura, 1905) Comb. nov. Agallia pteridis Matsumura, 1905, Thous. Ins. Jap. 2:68, Pl.21, f. 25, ♀(Pteridis!); Mats. 1912, J. Coll. Agr. Sapporo, 4(7):312;Esaki, 1932, Iconogr. Ins. Jap. 1767, f. 3492 (pteroides!); Esaki, 1950, Ibid. rev. ed. 297, f. 792 (pterides!); Ishihara, 1953, Sci. Rep. Matsuyama Agr. Coll. 11:22, Pl. 11, 3a, b, c♀; Esaki et Ito, 1954, Tent. Cat. 249. Distr.: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu. Agallia graminis Iguchi (nom. und.), Ins. World, 12:292(1908), seems to be the male of the present species. 2. Onukigallia onukii (Matsumura, 1912) Comb. nov. Agallia onukii Matsumura, 1912, loc. cit. 313;Ishihara, 1953, loc. cit. Pl. 11. 3c♂ (Tegmen of Agallia pteridis Ishihara nec Matsumura); Esaki et Ito, 1954, loc. cit. 249. Distr.: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku (New record-many ♂♂♀♀, Matsuyama, Mt. Ishizuchi, Mt. Tsurugi, Mt. Kajigamori, etc.). Agallia onukii Esaki, (nec Matsumura, 1912), 1932, Iconogr. Ins. Jap. 1768, f. 3493; 1950, Ibid. rev. ed. 297, f. 793, is not a member of the Family Agallidae but is a species of the Family Idioceridae and seems to be conspecific with Idiocerus ishiyamae Matsumura, 1912.
